9 Energy

Blog Entry #8: Energy

"In fact, however, 95 percent of the world's petroleum came not from giant land animals but from microscopic marine organisms."

I had the impression that our fossil fuels came from the bones of huge dinosaurs. But, as the text says, it was from the tiny microscopic marine organisms that is fueling our cars. I find it interesting that such seemingly insignificant organisms are responsible for so much. When looking up petroleum. I found a gas station named, "Go Green Petroleum".  A 2012 Gallup Poll found that 61% of people have a negative view of oil companies. Oil companies are now making strides to be seen as a positive influence on the environment. Go Green Petroleum, on of the stations are in Estero, is an example of this. Hopefully, there is actual progress being made and not just the word "Green" plastered on the sign to gain people's trust.

"Natural gas is the cleanest-burning of the fossil fuels. Although it, too, emits greenhouse gases, it emits less carbon dioxide and less pollution than oil or coal, and may play a role as a bridge in the transition to renewable energy."

Now I know why there is so much hype around natural gas. I always knew it had a lighter impact on the environment but I didn't know in what way. This sounds like a viable option towards renewable energy. I expect to see more natural gas in the future, being that we don't have much of an option when it comes to sustaining the environment. I actually found an interesting fact about natural gases They are colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which makes then hard to detect when extracting them. So, distributors add mercaptan, which is a chemical that gives it a foul odor. It smells of rotten eggs. This serves as a safety measure.

"The most dangerous of fossil fuel combustion is the buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases...It is emitted from the tailpipes of trucks and automobiles and the smokestacks of coal-burning power plants."

The fact that the most dangerous of fossil fuel combustion is emitted from cars and trucks is devastating. The atmosphere must really be taking a toll. No wonder the air is thick and muggy in the most populated areas. I notice in many of the power plant websites, there is an emphasis on family and smart, reliable options for lifestyles. This completely contradicts the implied danger power plants have on the environment and to our own health.
